Some more tips when submitting resumes (and a rant)

I’m going through my emails today and I can’t help but notice the number of applicants that send an email with NO ATTACHMENTS!  If you’re interested in the job, attach AT LEAST your resume.  Simple inquiries will be ignored.  Why?  Because answering questions would be a waste of time if we found out that you don’t qualify for the visa.

Also, being specific is good, but don’t write down the minimum salary you will accept.  This is just crass (would you do that back home?).  We list the salaries in the jobs that we offer.  If you want something in that range, apply for that job.  If you don’t get the salary that you wanted, you can always try to negotiate or reject the offer.  Asking about money from the get-go is a definite no-no.

DO NOT mass email recruiters and schools your resume and photo.  We see all of our competitors names on the ‘To’ line and it just shows how lazy you are.  Write one email per agency/school and be specific that you found so and so on the internet and you wish to apply for so and so position.

DO NOT apply for the job if you don’t fit the needs of the position.  For example, if a position requires F-visa applicants only, don’t ask if they will accept an E-2.  You’ll just be wasting your time.  If the position requires that you work from 2:30 to 8:30 pm, don’t ask if you could have part-time hours in the morning.  The school will not make changes in their schedule.

Read the advertisement carefully before sending off your resume.

  1. I think you could give the same advice about leaving extra names in the ‘to:’ section of an email to your rivals. You’d be ama how many do that same thing.

    Another thing that bugs me is when they ask me questions which they could answer just by looking at my resume. You want to know a good number to reach me at? Well the one I have on my resume would be a great start.

    It makes it quite clear they haven’t bother looking at my resume.
