The Honest Truth About Recruiting in Korea

Toyota Korea to Recall 13,000 Cars

with 4 comments

I posted before that Toyotas in Korea are not affected by the haywire accelerator.  Looks like I was wrong or more precisely, they were wrong.

Toyota has decided to recall some 13,000 Toyota and Lexus cars sold in Korea, four months after it launched a recall in the U.S. due to accelerator pedal problems.

The decision came after the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs ordered the recall on Tuesday, which seemingly contradicts Toyota Korea’s earlier claims that its vehicles sold in Korea were free from the problems that prompted the recall in the U.S.

The ministry, which handles investigations of faulty cars, had accepted Toyota’s claims and postponed its judgment. But a thorough examination in February by the Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute showed that rubber floor mats could potentially interfere with accelerator pedals.

“We inspected all comparable vehicles made by both foreign and domestic makers, including nine models by Lexus and Toyota sold in Korea,” an institute staffer said. “Only three models — the Lexus ES350, the Toyota Camry and the Camry Hybrid — had the floor mat problem.”

The recalled cars are 11,232 Lexus ES350 units imported and sold in Korea between Nov. 29, 2005 and Jan. 21, 2010; 1,549 Toyota Camry units sold between Feb. 17, 2009 and Jan. 25, 2010; and 203 Camry Hybrids sold between Feb. 19, 2009 and Jan. 17, 2010. The total number comes to 12,984.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Hisao Nakabayashi, president of Toyota Korea, stressed that there should be no problem if the cars are driven properly, and the recall is completely voluntary on Toyota’s part.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Transportation Department on Monday has proposed a US$16.4 million fine against Toyota for failing to notify the government in a timely way of the acceleration pedal problems. It is the largest fine ever by the U.S. government against an auto company.

  2. Ugh – this entire thing, now with a $16M+ fine in the U.S. is so unfortunate. Hard to believe Toyota got themselves into this fix.

    • Agreed. As I mentioned before, damage control much earlier in the process wouldn’t have gotten them into the mess they are in now.
