Ask the Recruiter: Racism Against Asian Candidates?

Allan asked the following question regarding this post (and yes, you may absolutely link your blog to mine!):

Hi ‘recruiter,’ I just found your site tonight through a link on another Korea blog. I may be a little late to the party, as they say, but I’ve already applied for and been accepted (tentatively) to Seoul/SMOE. In your post, you said “Smart/politically-correct clients would never outright say they don’t hire black people or Chinese-Canadians (born in Canada!); they would just make up some excuse as to why not to hire them.” Being Chinese-American, does this mean I have a higher chance of being turned down during my document review with EPIK/SMOE? Just curious as my wife & I have already spend at least $150USD trying to get the documents, TESOL certification, etc. to comply with EPIK guidelines. Would love to get the inside scoop on this as we will have to have the inevitable Plan B just in case EPIK falls through. Up to this point, we figured we had a good chance given that we were not declined during the initial application review & phone interviews. Look forward to hearing from you! (Also, would you mind if I linked to your blog from mine? Mine is still being set up and should go live in August -assuming we are accepted into EPIK).

I don’t really work with public schools myself as that task belongs to someone else but from my understanding, public schools are less discriminating than hagwons (someone wish to refute this?).  However, I do recall about a year or so ago that one MOE (forgot which one) specifically said ‘no blacks’ or something extremely and bluntly ignorant like that in their ‘official’ instructor request.  While no one said anything outright, recruiters simply didn’t send them any candidates.

I think that because it’s a ‘government’ initiative to hire native instructors for public schools, they cannot discriminate, although they clearly did in the example above.  Also, I know of several gyopos and Asian-Americans/Canadians that do work for SMOE, GEPIK, EPIK so I wouldn’t imagine you having any problems as well.

Hagwons on the other hand are a different story entirely.  Some hagwons do prefer F-4 candidates, who are obviously very Asian-looking, but are adamantly against hiring other Asian candidates, regardless of their background.  Guess it’s a visa thing or just plain ‘ole discrimination at work.

Don’t Call Your Recruiter on the Weekend…

…or after business hours, especially at some ridiculous hour like 11:00 pm on a Friday night.  Unless I’ve asked you to do so of course.  It’s just plain rude and a reflection of the extreme lack of common sense.  This needs to be added to this post here.

I do have to give out my cell phone on certain occasions to confirm that a candidate has arrived in Korea, which is usually after 7:00 pm.  However, this does not give them the right to use that number as their personal complaint/help line.  You wouldn’t believe the questions I get:

“Can you tell me how to use my washing machine?’

“My neighbors are making a lot of noise, what should I do?”

“My boss is being a dick.”

“When is my payday?”

Why can’t this wait until Monday or why don’t you have enough sense to bring it up with your school?!?!?!?  One annoying phone call is all I need to block your number from further interruptions.  Now some of you may say that as a recruiter, I have to do my best to help applicants that go through me.  Again, the questions above speak for themselves.  I help candidates find a suitable position and the schools to find a suitable instructor.  That’s it.  I’m not a point person for ridiculousness like this.

I actually had a mother call me over the weekend from the U.S. at 11:00 pm relaying her worries that her ‘baby’ doesn’t know to speak Korean.  WTF?!?!?!?  What was she expecting me to say?

Plain stupid.  You’re not coming to a summer camp.  This is a job.  Take it seriously.
